My English verse is still far from the refined Russian one, but I'm getting there...
I've seen an angel smile at me -
So peaceful, full of joy and light!
He spoke of future yet to be -
Of all the things - both dark and bright.
The angel whispered: "You will live
In beauty of the life in love" -
He smiled again: "Do you believe?
The earth is near, enchanted dove!"
The angel sang, the angel kissed,
Like wind on warm and sunny day.
"The one", he told, "who is so missed,
Will soon return and he will stay".
The angel talked, I heard the sound -
The sound of voice that I well knew...
The angel smiled and turned around...
My God! The angel! That was you!...
